Dear Don,
Glad to here your thinking about getting into this part of the trucking industry.
I would like to give you more specific answers with regard to driving an A or B size units but I am in the process of gathering a lot more info on this topic to broaden my own knowledge. Since I have only driven a straight truck I don't know all there is to know to give you detailed information. What I can share with you is some of the knowledge van drivers have shared with me. They tell me the costs to run a van are much less than to drive a straight truck so potentially you can make more however there are sacrifices such as missing loads in certain areas and  losing the comforts of a larger living area. Then there's the dilemma should  you go diesel or gas? I've gotten a fair share of both so I'm not sure which is best. With diesel your maintenance cost more but they last longer than gas. As  far as driving for someone first before you buy your own van I highly recommend that. In a smaller vehicle there's not a hole lot you'll be missing in comfort  by driving someone else's equipment and what better way to try this type of  trucking to see if it's for you before you commit to a hefty loan payment. At  least if you don't like it you can walk away from it without a big financial burden. The key is to find someone who pays well and is fair about expenses. In  the near future you will see a topic dedicated to vans in the express industry and I hope to be more helpful when that article publishes so please come back to the site.I will email you to let you know when it will be posted. Sorry I  can't be of more help right now but I would rather provide you with the most  accurate and detailed information than to make assumptions good luck to you and I hope the site helps provide you with other vital information you will need in entering this exciting career.
Best wishes,
Lynn
